According to Forrester Research, 2018 is the Year of Enterprise DevOps
June 20, 2018
Here at Professional Designations, we have already mentioned that Forrester has dubbed 2018 as the Year of Enterprise DevOps…but what does that actually entail?
In their 2017 DevOps Benchmark Online Survey, Forrester measured the growth of the DevOps movement in the following categories:
Culture
When organizations undergo major change, it’s important that the people embrace the change in order for it to be a success. The survey found that organizations are increasingly embracing this shift in culture as a foundational component of the DevOps transition. Additionally, the survey also found an increasing shift in team attitudes towards a culture of experimentation – a huge win for DevOps!
Increased Automation
The study also found that “organizations that have adopted automation across the complete lifecycle including continuous integration, continuous delivery and production deployment have experienced more velocity and quality.” However, even with growing adoption of configuration management systems and complete automation of certain processes, there’s always room for improvement!
Going Lean
DevOps isn’t a standalone movement – there are many practices it borrows from other frameworks, and Lean is a particularly key one. High performing DevOps organizations have taken steps to “lean out” their processes, devoting the time previously spent on “keeping the lights on” to innovating instead.
Using Metrics
To truly know that implementing DevOps has contributed to success within an organization, there needs to be some sort of measurement. However, Forrester’s research “identifies that many organizations are struggling with DevOps metrics.” The research house also suggests measuring “metrics that align to velocity and throughput success,” to glean the optimal benefit from a DevOps program.
We’re almost halfway through 2018, and the buzz about DevOps hasn’t slowed down. We look forward to seeing what the second half of the year brings as DevOps continues to be embraced across all parts of the enterprise!
